The ruins of Cetatea Șoimoș are located on the hill “Cioaca Tăutului”, almost two kilometers northeast of Lipova, at an altitude of 129 meters. This medieval fortress was first mentioned in 1278 and played an important role as a strategic point of defense for centuries. In the 15th century, the castle was extensively renovated under the leadership of Iancu de Hunedoara. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, the fortress was the scene of numerous battles against the Ottoman invaders.
